The Wayans clan is a fairly talented bunch. Not only did Keenen Ivory Wayans write, direct and star in I’m Gonna Git You, Sucka - by the far the finest spoof of blaxploitation cinema – he also created ‘In Living Color’, the influential comedy show that introduced the world to Jim Carrey and Jamie Foxx.
His younger brother Marlon is also a gifted actor who proved that his range extends beyond ‘too much’ comedy with his sensitive turn as a drug addict in Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem For A Dream. Of course, the Wayans’ movie disasters – the strained gangbanger send-up Don’t Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood - prove that they’re also capable of the odd cock-up. And with White Chicks, the full extent of their fallibility is hideously exposed.
White Chicks stars
A comedy that plays the gross-out, gender-reversal and race cards with all the guile and imagination of a hapless poker player, White Chicks stars Shawn and Marlon Wayans as Kevin and Marcus Copeland, who are just a botched bust away from being kicked out of the FBI.
With their backs to the walls, the brothers have no choice but to take on the deepest of deep cover assignments.
So, with hotel heiresses Brittany (Ward) and Tiffany Wilson (Dudek) the target of kidnappers, it falls to the blacker-than-black Copeland boys to pose as the whiter-than-white Wilsons during a high profile jaunt to the Hamptons.
No doubt sold on the grounds that the premise is jam packed with comic potential, it’s remarkable just how unamusing White Chicks is. Indeed, one imagines Keenen Wayans might wish to sue the six screenwriters who struggle to summon up a laugh each, if that writing posse didn’t include himself and his two brothers.
